No smoke machine? No Problem.

We didn't have a real budget for this shoot, but I still wanted to generate a real atmosphere.We did it using a £1.50 buy from the local builders yard. More after the jump.

I found this location a few months ago shooting a local band, and really wanted to try something atmospheric, and with a sense of movement. The room is fantastic; a double height ceiling and two rows of south facing windows. Perfect for making rays of sunlight. But how to capture that? The obvious answer is a smoke machine, but they're not cheap enough for a no budget shoot.

The solution is line chalk. You can buy bottles from most builders yards, and they come in several colours. To add weight to the dancers movements, we poured chalk into their hair and onto their clothing, which is why you'll see it flying off them in a couple of shots on the set.

A couple of thoughts;

Unlike smoke machine smoke, the dust is going to get everywhere. Don't keep any spare equipment in the same space if possible
Likewise, you'll want to clean your camera and lens thoroughly after shooting
Also unlike smoke, the chalk will begin to colour the floor where it settles (you can see the effect of red and blue chalk in the above photo)
it isn't fun being covered in chalk, so you'll want to have water and towels around. Also - as pointed out in the comments - prolonged exposure can be bad for your health (although this seems to be generally regarded as years of exposure).

One of the most basic laws in the universe is the Second Law of Thermodynamics. This states that as time goes by, entropy in an environment will increase. Evolution argues differently against a law that is accepted EVERYWHERE BY EVERYONE. Evolution says that we started out simple, and over time became more complex. That just isn't possible: UNLESS there is a giant outside source of energy supplying the Earth with huge amounts of energy. If there were such a source, scientists would certainly know about it.

What's it Worth?

'A hospital cleaner generated ten times their pay in social wealth, but it still takes 27 of them to replace that destroyed by a city banker'

Interestingly I think this an underestimate. A leading city banker - according to NEF - earns anywhere from £500,000 a year, and upwards. He or she will - on average, destroy £7 of social wealth for every £1 paid (mainly by causing financial instability by indulging in risk trading).

Conversely, a hospital cleaner generates over £10 of social wealth for every £1 they earn - around £128,000 a year (mainly by keeping reducing the risk of infection, and MRSA).

The above figure of 27* is calculated using the lowest wage a typical leading city banker earns. At the higher end up to 540 cleaners would be needed.

A few weeks ago I was asked by Breadpig to design a t-shirt and poster based on perhaps the best known passage from Animal Farm;

'For once Benjamin consented to break his rule, and he read out to her what was written on the wall. There was nothing there now except a single Commandment. It ran: ALL ANIMALS ARE EQUAL BUT SOME ANIMALS ARE MORE EQUAL THAN OTHERS'

To avoid cliché I decided not to feature any of the book's characters in the illustration. As I rhythmically banged my head against the desk, trying to work out what I should illustrate instead, I remembered that insane Russian skyscraper, built from wood. The whole thing has this really organic look to the woodwork, like the guy who built it was hammering panels on at random. With this as a base I could add elements of Soviet era oppression (such as the Kremlin), as well as more modern symbols such as CCTV.

With all these ideas gathered into a final sketch I began to vector the image, first working on the silhouette and then filling in detail. At this point it was obvious I needed to bring in something to suggest the characters, even subtly;

The only problem now was that the CCTV cameras didn't really work - they just looked like bricks some conceptual artist had oddly balanced on posts round the barn, and anyway I didn't like how they broke the silhouette. warning: this next bit is pretentious.
I wanted the cameras to look in - making a point about how CCTV (and surveillance society in general) is often turned on the people it's meant to protect. Just as I began to consider dropping them entirely a simple solution presented itself. They just needed to be attached to the buildings.

The Robin Hood Tax

Found this and thought it was an excellent idea. The Robin Hood Tax is a tax on bankers that would raise billion by taking an average of 0.05% from speculative banking transactions. That means the 'casino' trading that is overwhelmingly responsible for the current financial crisis.

There does seem to be some concern that banks would simple pass these costs on, but it still seems like a good idea.

How I work
I keep getting asked how I work, so I thought I'd post up some rough work here too. Unusually I knew exactly how I was going to illustrate this quote the second I read it. Usually though, I begin with a page or three of thumbnail sketches.

I still had to figure out exactly how the figure was going to look though. Yes, there's a penis. I dropped this to make the figure a little more androgynous (although I think the stance and body-shape is still more typically male). Also, thank god I got rid of the bunches.

I then looked up some bacteria body types on google images, and doodled them for an hour or so, pen straight to paper (they were so quick to draw I wasn't worried about making mistakes).

Next I scanned the sketches. I used live trace in illustrator to vectorise the bacteria, and added colour. I then used a tablet to draw over the figure, fixing the shape as I went.

With those steps done I composed the final image. I then imported this into Photoshop, and added a little noise. Job done!

1800 Miles South

For 90 days I cycled down the West Coast of North America, sometimes alone, often with other riders I met on the way, but mostly with Amanda, a friend living in Canada. Three months earlier she'd sent me a message on Facebook saying she was going to ride to Mexico. It wasn't an invitation, but I invited myself anyway.

The nine photograph that make up the exhibition are a linear progression down the entire length of the journey, from start to finish. Each is accompanied by an illustration of an uncaptured detail.

Apparently, according to Harvard Medical School, 45,000 Americans die a year due to lack of Universal Healthcare. That's 58 times the number of people who die yearly due to terrorism, at least according to the US Department of State (although we're not entirely sure what they class as 'terrorism').
